Iran Has Not Yet Decided Whether to Sign the Deal With the US. Trump Promises Peace
Iran has not yet made a definitive decision on whether it will sign the agreement with the United States, the Iranian semi-official Fars news agency reported on Sunday, citing a well-informed source close to the negotiating team.
The AFP agency informed about the situation. US President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the agreement is scheduled to be signed on Sunday.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has not yet adopted or announced its final decision regarding the memorandum of understanding proposed during the negotiations,” AFP quoted the Iranian agency.
Reopening of the Strait of Hormuz
The draft agreement, according to Reuters, includes the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the termination of the US blockade of Iranian ports.
AFP notes that the proposed agreement faces resistance from some Iranian ultra-conservative officials who reject concessions, particularly regarding control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which Iran de facto blocks.
The Details of the Islamabad Memorandum
On Saturday, Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social that the signing of the agreement is planned for Sunday, and immediately after, the Strait of Hormuz will open to everyone.
Normally, a fifth of the world’s oil supply and a large amount of liquefied natural gas flow through this strait.
Reuters also cited an unnamed high-ranking Iranian official, according to whom the draft of the so-called Islamabad Memorandum includes a commitment by Tehran not to produce nuclear weapons or attempt to acquire them by other means.
Iran is also expected to dilute its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium. The exact method is to be agreed upon within the next 60 days.
Release of Frozen Assets
Furthermore, according to the official, the proposal is based on the United States releasing 25 billion dollars (522 billion CZK) from frozen Iranian assets and lifting anti-Iranian oil sanctions for a certain period, which would allow the Middle Eastern country to export oil.
Washington should also not adopt any new anti-Iranian sanctions before a final peace agreement is reached.
